Catamarca

Minera la Alumbrera: Es el caso testigo de la minería metalífera a gran escala. Funciona desde hace mas de doce años en Andalgalá, Catamarca. Se encuentra entre los diez grandes emprendimientos de cobre del mundo y entre los 15 de oro (exporta 190 mil toneladas anuales de concentrados de cobre y 23 mil toneladas de oro). Es la mina más grande de Argentina y está gerenciada por un consorcio de empresas: la suiza Xstrata y las canadienses Goldcorp y Northern Orion. Es una obra faraónica que remueve, por día, 340 toneladas de roca y utiliza, por minuto, 66 mil litros de agua. Factura por año 680 millones de dólares y nada de lo que prometió (y suelen prometer las empresas mineras) se cumplió: no hubo desarrollo local, no hubo más trabajo, y sí hubo casos de contaminación, tanto del suelo, del aire y el agua.
